Description
This is Deer Lick Cave in the Brecksville Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks. Salt from the ocean that long ago covered Ohio was trapped in the sands along the ocean’s shores. This sand later became sandstone. White-tailed deer need salt but don’t get it from the plants they eat, so they lick the salt from the sandstone, giving Deer Lick Cave its name. (It's actually a rock overhang and not a cave, though beautiful to deer and humans alike year-round!)
